One of Mississauga’s most beautiful parks is looking rough recently and needs a facelift.

Visitors to Kariya Park in City Center may have noticed the wooden bridge over the pond is missing and the gardens and pathways are in poor condition.

The park, which honors the twin-city relationship with Kariya City in Japan, opened in 1992. Since then it has become a popular spot, particularly during the cherry blossom season.

The wood bridge is undergoing lifecycle replacement, a City of Mississauga spokesperson tells insauga.com.

The city is waiting for the fabrication of the bridge and expects delivery by the end of July.

The installation of the new bridge is expected to be finished at the end of August.

Once the bridge is complete, the city’s parks department plans to renovate the granular paths and edges for 2024.

“Staff are also reinstating gardens that were damaged during the busy spring season,” the spokesperson said.

And Kariya Park will soon have WiFi as part of the iParks project, which introduces technology into parks across Mississauga.

The iParks project also includes solar charging benches, park user counting technologies and interactive features for park patrons such as bike repair stations.

While Kariya Park can get busy during the cherry blossom season, it is also known as a quiet escape from the busy City Centre.

Fun fact: Kariya has a Mississauga Park featuring a replica of the city hall.
