Carolina Herrera celebrated its 45th anniversary with a Spring 2027 runway show at the David H. Koch Theater in Lincoln Center. The event featured 30,000 yellow tulips and designs by creative director Wes Gordon. The tulips, a nod to Herrera’s love for florals and New York’s springtime charm, were strategically placed along the runway, creating a visually stunning backdrop that complemented the collection’s lively palette and structured designs.
A Night to Remember
The brand transformed the former Mortimer’s space, now Orsay, into a tribute to the iconic 1980s boîte. Custom matchbooks and menus bore the name “Herrera’s,” capturing the spirit of the legendary spot. Mortimer’s, known for its exclusive clientele and tough door policy, was a favorite of Herrera’s during her early years in New York. The recreation included meticulous details, from the ambiance to the decor, ensuring guests felt transported back to the glamorous era of the 1980s.
“What mattered most was capturing the spirit of Mortimer’s,” Gordon said. “The magic was as much about the people in the room as it was about the room itself.” Gordon emphasized that the goal was not to replicate Mortimer’s exactly but to evoke its essence, blending nostalgia with contemporary elegance.
Honoring a Legacy
Carolina Herrera moved to New York City in 1980 and debuted her first collection in 1981. Her timeless, tailored pieces quickly became favorites among socialites and celebrities. Herrera’s designs were celebrated for their sophistication and wearability, earning her a reputation as a master of American elegance. Notable clients included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Caroline Kennedy, for whom Herrera designed a wedding dress.
Gordon, who has led the brand since 2018, blends its classic motifs with modern interpretations. The anniversary collection reflects Herrera’s early years in New York, featuring bold florals and structured silhouettes. Gordon’s approach involves revisiting archival elements while infusing them with contemporary relevance, ensuring the brand remains both timeless and forward-looking.
The runway show also paid homage to Herrera’s friendship with Andy Warhol. Gordon collaborated with the Andy Warhol Foundation to incorporate Warhol’s 1979 silkscreen portrait of Herrera into select pieces. The portrait, which captures Herrera’s signature red lip and Gibson roll hairstyle, was featured on garments like an embroidered mini dress and the Jacqueline bag, bridging art and fashion in a meaningful way.
A Celebration of New York
Following the show, guests including Karlie Kloss and Alexa Chung gathered at Orsay. The ceiling was covered in black and white balloons, a nod to Mortimer’s iconic parties. Artist Tim Snell, who created the venue’s original murals, contributed new works for the evening. The atmosphere was electric, with guests immersed in a blend of old-world glamour and modern sophistication, perfectly encapsulating Herrera’s legacy.
