A Modern Mediterranean-style garden has revitalized a narrow courtyard in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, converting it into a functional open-air retreat that takes advantage of the home’s northern exposure. Noble Architecture traded a dull, poorly proportioned area for a lively garden focused on comfort and climate responsiveness. The renovation reuses salvaged materials and incorporates flowing forms to redefine the courtyard’s ambiance.
An area that seemed more confined than it actually was
Prior to the overhaul, the courtyard provided few incentives for outdoor use. It was dull, oddly configured, and offered minimal seating, giving the impression of being cramped even with its southern orientation. Rather than serving as a natural extension of the house, it became a neglected corner with few options for relaxation or hosting guests.
Curved surfaces and salvaged walkways
While the property lines remain the same, the courtyard now feels significantly more spacious. Salvaged pavers arranged at a 45-degree angle guide the gaze across the area, visually widening the space while repurposing old materials. Bordering the walkways, indigenous flora mingles with Mediterranean-style elements to blend texture and hue.
Custom Corten steel borders clearly delineate garden beds, where climbers ascend stainless steel guide wires. Over time, creeping fig and native bower vine will enrich the vertical greenery, enhancing the garden’s mature character.
Materials and Design Choices
The design shifts the experience of the space. Every decision, from reclaimed paving to softly curved walls and low-carbon materials, reshapes the courtyard. This creates distinct places to relax, entertain, and enjoy throughout the year.
A nook made for connection
Featured prominently is the bespoke bench seating built into the courtyard. Positioned under the canopy of mature trees, it offers a cozy gathering spot that remains part of the garden setting. The curved walls wrap around the seating area, creating a sense of enclosure without isolation.
A renovated fountain and water features
A heritage lion-head fountain has been meticulously restored and reclaims its role as the garden’s central feature. In addition to its visual charm, the soft sound of trickling water masks urban noise and deepens the sense of calm. Repurposed stone carvings embedded in planting beds nod to the past, pairing aged details with modern accents.
Entertainment area with eco-friendly materials
The back portion of the courtyard is tailored for outdoor entertaining, featuring a built-in barbecue set flush with the pavers. Long-format Lutyens bricks from Natural Brick Co. span the countertop and base, forming a cohesive masonry surface. These bricks incorporate 45 to 50 percent locally sourced hemp and are solar cured to reduce embodied carbon.
