The University of Huddersfield has installed Hamworthy Heating’s latest Modumax mk4 boilers at two key locations on its campus. This move is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
The new boilers are located at Queen Street and The Laura Annie Willson Building, where space and access were limited. The university needed a solution that could provide the necessary heating output while optimizing the existing plant room layouts.
The chosen system includes a two-stack configuration with a total output of 294 kW for the Queen Street plant room and a three-stack configuration with a total output of 762 kW for the Laura Annie Willson building.
Bob Smith from Hamworthy Heating noted that the Laura Annie Willson plant room demonstrates how the mk4 boilers can deliver the required output in space-restricted environments. The modular design of the boilers allowed for efficient use of available space, achieving a total output of 762 kW within a compact footprint.

This design also simplified installation, as each unit was dismantled into individual sections, transported through available access routes, and reassembled in position. This approach minimized the need for significant alterations to the plant rooms.
The mk4 boilers feature a 5:1 turndown ratio, low Class 6 NOx emissions, and up to 95% gross seasonal efficiency. They also include a user-friendly full-color touchscreen interface to simplify operation and maintenance.
Luke Brearcliffe, Project Manager at Gasmech Services Limited, commented that the new boilers have performed well since installation, particularly during the winter months. They have noticed improvements in day-to-day operation, and Hamworthy Heating has provided responsive support throughout the process.
The installation of the Modumax mk4 boilers has helped the University of Huddersfield meet its long-term sustainability goals by providing an efficient heating system.
